Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are an extremely popular tropical fish due to its hardy nature and beautiful colours. These animals are also extremely easy to breed.
Guppies are generally easy to care for. They grow to an average of 2 inches in length (females tend to get slightly larger) and live for approximately 2 years. They need a minimum of 5 gallons for a trio. They are comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, from low 70's to low 80's.
Male and female guppies should be kept in a 1:2 ratio; two female guppies for every one male guppy. This ensures that the male guppies cannot harass the female guppies to death. You would be able to keep guppies in same-sex groups to keep them from reproducing.
Guppies can live with a huge variety of fish. They can live with any peaceful community species. Do not keep guppies with any animals large enough to eat them, or any animals that are prone to fin-nipping.
