African Dwarf Frog

CHARACTERISTICS

The African Dwarf Frog (Hymenochirus sp.) are a dwarf species of fully-aquatic frog. They have a slightly bumpy, uniformly brown body with black spots and a cream coloured belly.

These frogs are a great bottomfeeder that can be kept with many different species. These frogs are nocturnal and breathe from the surface of the water. While the do not require any platforms above water, they should always have access to the surface of your aquarium. These amphibians live to be 5 years old on average and grow to be 3 inches in length. They prefer water temperature to be in the mid-70's. While these animals are quite hardy, they do absorb toxins through their sensitive skin. Make sure you add these to a fully cycled aquarium. 

These frogs prefer to live in groups. A small group of 2-3 can easily live in a 5-gallon aquarium. They prefer aquariums with no gravel/substrate, or aquariums with sand substrates. They can accidentally ingest large gravel pieces and choke on them.

These frogs generally prefer live or frozen foods, but will accept flake or small pellets. They are scavengers, and will be easily out-competed for food if kept with energetic fish tankmates. We prefer to target feed our frogs with a pipette full of frozen foods.

These frogs are very docile and will live with a wide variety of peaceful tankmates. They will, however, eat baby shrimp and fish fry if they get too close. These frogs will eat anything large enough to swallow, but will not attack other animals if well-fed.
