Anubias barteri var. glabra (historically and widely known in the hobby as Anubias lanceolata or Anubias minima) is a elegant, mid-sized variety famous for its sleek, lance-shaped (spear-like) leaves. Unlike the broad, heart-shaped leaves of standard Anubias barteri, var. glabra features long, narrow, dark green foliage that tapers to a fine point, adding a unique, flowing texture to aquascapes.
Aquarium Requirements
- Lighting: Low to moderate. Because it grows slowly, keeping it in shaded areas—such as underneath taller background plants or floating vegetation—prevents green spot algae from growing on its leaves.
- Water Parameters: Temperature of 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F), pH between 6.0 and 8.0, and soft to hard water.
- Supplements: Totally fine in low-tech setups without CO2. It absorbs nutrients directly from the water column, so occasional dosing with a liquid fertilizer keeps the leaves rich and glossy.
- Fish Compatibility: Completely safe for shrimp and snails. Its tough, leathery leaves are exceptionally sturdy, meaning herbivorous fish like African cichlids and goldfish will not eat it.
