Anubias barteri var. nana 'Petite' (commonly just called Anubias Petite) is the definitive, undisputed superstar of the nano aquascaping world. Originally cultivated as a selective mutation at the Oriental Aquarium Plant Nursery in Singapore, it combines the famous, bulletproof durability of standard Anubias with miniature, teardrop-shaped leaves that rarely grow larger than a dime (1 to 2 cm across). The entire plant maxes out at a compact 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) in height.
Aquarium Requirements
- Lighting: Low to moderate. Because it grows incredibly slowly (producing about one leaf every few weeks), high lighting will quickly coat its leaves in stubborn green spot algae or black beard algae. Keep it shaded beneath taller canopy plants if your lights are bright.
- Water Parameters: Super adaptable. Thrives in temperatures from 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F) and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Nutrients: Highly resilient in low-tech tanks. While it doesn't need supplemental CO2, regular dosing with an all-in-one liquid fertilizer keeps the miniature leaves vivid and glossy.
- Tank Mates: Its leathery, tough leaf cuticle makes it entirely cichlid- and goldfish-proof, while providing a perfect grazing pasture for freshwater shrimp and snails.
