Anubias hastifolia is an easy-to-care-for, slow-growing, rhizome-based plant with arrow-shaped leaves, ideal for beginner aquarium mid-grounds. It thrives in low-to-moderate light (72–82°F, 6–8 pH) and MUST be attached to rocks or wood, as burying the rhizome causes rotting. It is suitable for low-tech setups.
This video provides a general overview of Anubias care for beginners:
Key Care Requirements:
-
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is best. Avoid high-intensity, direct light to prevent algae growth on the leaves.
-
Planting: Do not bury the thick rhizome in substrate, as this will lead to rotting. Instead, attach it to driftwood or rocks using fishing line, thread, or superglue gel.
-
Water Conditions: Thrives in temperatures of 72–82°F (22–28°C) and a pH range of 6.0–8.0.
-
Maintenance: Slow-growing, often producing only one leaf per month. It is durable and often ignored by herbivorous fish.
-
Nutrients: Does not require CO2 injection, though it may respond well to it. It benefits from regular, nutrient-rich water, specifically with iron, magnesium, and potassium.
-
Propagation: Propagate by cutting the rhizome, ensuring each fragment has at least 3 nodes and some leaves.
Common Issues:
-
Rhizome Rot: Caused by burying the rhizome too deep, often resulting in the entire plant melting.
-
Melting: New plants may lose leaves when transitioning to a new environment.
-
Algae: Green spot algae (GSA) can appear on leaves if lighting is too high.
