Clown loaches (Chromobotia macracanthus) are popular, peaceful, and active schooling fish that require large tanks (75+ gallons) due to their 12-inch adult size and long lifespan (10–20+ years). They need warm water (76-86F), soft substrate, and plenty of hiding spots. Prone to ich, they require high-quality water, regular maintenance, and keeping in groups of 5+ to thrive.
Tank Setup and Environment
- Tank Size: 75-gallon minimum for small groups, with 100+ gallons recommended for adults.
-
Water Conditions: Temperature 78-86F (25-30C), PH 6.0-7.5.
- Substrate & Decor: Use sand to protect their sensitive barbels. Provide abundant hiding places like driftwood, caves, and plants to reduce stress
- Lighting: Prefer subdued lighting.
Diet & Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, requiring a varied diet.
- Foods: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen/live bloodworms, tubifex worms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables like zucchini.
- Feeding Habits: They are active scavengers, often searching the bottom for food.
Behaviour and Tank Mates
- Social: Must be kept in groups of at least 5 to prevent severe stress.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful community fish, but they can be rough on live plants.
- Activity: Active, curious, and often "play" together, sometimes clicking when feeding or interacting.
