Teddy Bear hamsters are one of the most iconic animals kept. Line bred from the standard Syrian hamster, Teddy Bears feature longer coats which emphasize their features. Through regular positive interactions with their human companions, they can learn to enjoy being handled and also make excellent observation animals. Curious in nature, Teddy Bear hamsters thrive when kept in habitats with exercise wheels and tubes, and soft non dusty bedding to dig in. During feeding time, it is not uncommon to see a hamster store food in their large cheek pouches until it can be moved to what they feel is a safer place.
Life Expectancy 2 - 3 years.
Max Size 6 inches; 5.3 ounces
Feeding Instructions
Give fresh water and food specifically formulated for hamsters daily. Treats formulated for hamsters can be offered on occasion.
Habitat and Care
A single hamster should be kept in a minimum sized habitat of 12x12x18. Teddy bear hamsters are a beginner level animal and fairly easy to care for. Clean food and water should be offered daily, and hamster specific chews should be rotated to help keep their teeth from overgrowing. Hamsters benefit from a variety of exercises using wheels, tubes, and tunnels for enrichment. Hamsters can be territorial and adults should not be housed together. Daily spot cleaning of the habitat is recommended and a weekly deep clean is required to keep your animal healthy long term. Hamsters can be handled outside their habitat with caution as to not expose them to any dangers in the home environment.
