Most Hygrophila species in the aquarium hobby originate from Asia, but Hygrophila costata is native to North to South America. This species is also known as Hygrophila guyanensis and is very variable, with different forms.
Aquarium Care & Growth
This hardy species is well-suited for beginners due to its high adaptability to varying water conditions.
- Growth Rate: Very fast; it requires regular pruning to maintain its shape and prevent it from overtaking smaller tanks.
- Lighting: Thrives in medium to high light. While it can survive in lower light, brighter conditions promote more compact growth.
- Water Parameters: Prefers temperatures between 68-82F and a PH range of 6.0 to 7.5
- Substrate & Nutrients: Benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate like aquarium soil and regular liquid fertilisation.
- Propagation: Extremely easy via stem cuttings. Simply snip a top shoot and replant it into the substrate to grow a new plant
