Juncus repens (commonly known as the Lesser Creeping Rush) is a unique, highly versatile marsh plant native to the swampy wetlands of the southeastern United States. It occupies a rare structural category in the hobby, looking like a hybrid between a stem plant and a grass-like rosette. It features flat, sturdy stems interrupted every inch or so by clusters of narrow, pointed leaves, making it a favorite for adding geometric, pine-tuft textures to modern aquascapes.
Aquarium Requirements
- Lighting: Low to high (higher intensity unlocks the reddish-bronze colors).
- CO2 Injection: Optional but highly recommended. It easily survives in low-tech setups, but carbon dioxide helps the tufts grow much thicker and tighter together.
- Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature range of 15°C to 28°C (59°F to 82°F) and an adaptable pH range between 5.5 and 8.0.
- Algae Vulnerability Note: Because of its slow-to-moderate growth and brush-like clusters, it can be somewhat susceptible to green spot algae. Avoid placing it in direct, intense lighting without balancing your nitrates and CO2.
