Ophiopogon japonicus 'Pusillus' (commonly known as Dwarf Mondo Grass, Kyoto Dwarf, or Lilyturf) is a highly compact, tufted perennial native to the open and forested slopes of East Asia. While it is frequently packaged and sold as a freshwater "aquarium foreground plant" in pet shops, it is not a true aquatic plant and will rot if kept fully submerged long-term. Instead, it is an exceptional, bulletproof selection for the terrestrial and damp shoreline areas of closed terrariums, paludariums, and ripariums.
Habitat: Paludariums & Terrariums
- Placement: Ideal as an emersed foreground accent or "fairy garden" ground cover planted right at or above the waterline. Its roots can remain consistently wet, making it perfect for damp moss walls or bog edges.
- Lighting: Highly shade-tolerant. It thrives in low to moderate indirect lighting. Excessive direct light can scorch the fine leaf blades.
- Humidity: It loves the high-humidity (70%+) environments of enclosed glass containers, which keep its evergreen foliage looking glossy.
- Substrate: Requires a rich, humusy, slightly acidic soil that drains well so the core runner doesn't sit in stagnant, anaerobic mud.
