Rotala 'Nanjenshan' (often called Taiwanese Rotala or Pine Tree Rotala) is a beautiful, fine-leaved stem plant native to the slow-moving waterways of Taiwan. Believed by many to be a natural hybrid between Rotala rotundifolia and Rotala wallichii, it combines the bushy, needle-leaf appearance of wallichii with the much higher adaptability and ease of care of rotundifolia. It typically grows to a height of 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12 inches), forming thick, fluffy bushes.
Cultivation & Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate to high. Lower light levels cause the lower leaves to turn black, drop off, and make the plant look leggy.
- CO2 Injection: While it can survive without carbon dioxide, CO2 is highly recommended to achieve dense, compact branching and healthy needle development.
- Water Parameters: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Maintain temperatures between 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F) and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Substrate & Fertilization: Plant it directly into a nutrient-rich aquarium soil. It consumes high amounts of micro and macronutrients from the water column, meaning regular iron and potassium dosing is required to maintain its bright color.
