Rotala rotundifolia 'Orange Juice' (often simply called Rotala OJ) is a vibrant, highly sought-after cultivated color morph of the standard Rotala rotundifolia species, originally selected and propagated in Italy. It is celebrated for its unique ability to introduce warm, glowing citrus hues—ranging from bright peach-orange to a warm salmon-pink—into the aquarium layout. It bridges the aesthetic gap beautifully between strictly red and green background plants.
Care & Cultivation Profile
- Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate. It possesses the legendary, bulletproof adaptability of standard Rotala rotundifolia, making it significantly easier to cultivate than the highly finicky Rotala wallichii or Rotala 'Nanjenshan'.
- Growth Rate & Habit: Fast-growing. It features small internode lengths, meaning its slender, lance-shaped foliage grows very close together along upright stems. Under strong lighting, it branches aggressively and can even grow laterally along the substrate to form a thick carpet-like hedge before pushing upwards.
- Lighting: Moderate to high intensity is the primary trigger. Intense full-spectrum LED lighting prompts the plant to produce anthocyanin pigments, causing the top canopy to explode into rich orange and pink tones.
- CO2 Injection: Technically not mandatory for survival, but highly recommended. Supplemental carbon dioxide dramatically increases growth speed, leaves density, and color saturation.
- Substrate & Fertilizers: Thrives best when its roots are pushed into a nutrient-rich aquasoil. Regular dosing with a liquid fertilizer that is heavily enriched with iron and micronutrients is essential to prevent its leaves from looking pale.
