Rotala wallichii (commonly known as Whorly Rotala) is an elegant, highly delicate red stem plant native to the soft, slow-moving waters of Southeast Asia. Unlike the incredibly hardy, slow-growing Anubias, Bolbitis, and Cryptocoryne varieties discussed earlier, this is a highly demanding, advanced high-tech plant. It is prized by experienced aquascapers for its ultra-fine, needle-like whorled leaves that shift from light green to a vibrant pinkish-red or deep copper tone under the right conditions.
Placement & Maintenance Habits
- Tank Placement: Best planted in dense groupings in the midground to background. Because its feathery foliage is so thin, planting isolated single stems looks sparse; planting a large grouping creates a striking, cloud-like contrast against broader green plants.
- Trimming & Propagation: It is a relatively fast grower under high-tech setups. To propagate, simply use sharp aquascaping scissors to cut the top portion of a healthy stem and replant it directly back into a nutrient-rich aquasoil substrate. Frequent trimming forces the base plant to branch out, resulting in a much bushier presentation.
- The "Sleep" Indicator: As a unique indicator of health, when your aquarium lights turn off at night, Rotala wallichii will fold its fine needle leaves tightly upwards around the stem into a vertical cluster.
